Chandni Chowk

16 October. It was my first visit to Chandni Chowk. Getting down at the ‘Lal Quila’ metro station, the scenery that I encountered totally lived up to what I had expected of Chandni Chowk. No doubt that it is one of the busiest markets of ‘Purani’ Delhi. With innumerable shops on both sides of the road, while walking on the pavements thronged with visitors and roads jam-packed with rickshaws and two-wheelers, the whole atmosphere seemed to be enthusiastic and excited. And to talk about the shops in Chandni Chowk. What do you wish to buy? You name it, they have it. From the dry fruits market to the books market, from the electronics market to the market of watches and clocks, the list is endless. And the shopping spree gives way to _______. Any guesses? Of course, food ! The huge variety they have. Talking about myself, I treated myself with the famous ‘chole kulche’, ‘dahi bhalle’, and ‘rabri faluda’ of Chandni Chowk. But reaching the moment where we could finally eat was a struggle in itself. Our first junction, the ‘dahi bhalla’ shop was yet to open. So, we proceeded to ‘chole kulche’ which was located quite far away. […]

The People Around You….in a traffic jam

Hey reader! It’s been long since I had put up a post, and what is better than to resume the journey by revisiting one of my most favourite topics of the past. It enables us to reconnect with the previous posts and provides a fresh and energizing enthusiasm. I know….I know….I know. I had said that ‘Part III’ was the last part of ‘The People Around You’ series, but being stuck in a traffic jam for some long hours gave me ample time to observe the unique personalities around me and pushed me to write this post. So, what’s the wait for? Let’s begin with the BONUS post! The sleepy. Traffic jams are boring, aren’t they? In fact, they are monotonous. So, people tend to sleep. And they aren’t to be blamed. How long do you expect someone to see the same cars, trucks, buses, two wheelers around himself/herself and be wide awake in their ennui while doing nothing? So, it’s better to take a quick nap, unless you are the one driving, of course. The enjoying kind. They are the opposites of the sleepy kind. While the sleepy succumb to their boredom, enjoying ones carve their way out. What […]

The Emotions Series-Conclusion

Hey Reader ! I believe you have reached this post after browsing through the previous 5 posts in this series. Before I conclude the Emotions series, I would like to put forth one debatable aspect that crept into my mind, while writing these posts. Also, on contemplating about it, I myself came across the answer. So, it could be contended that there are times when we do not feel any emotion i.e., when we are ‘numb’. This goes against the statement I wrote in the introduction, “We always find ourselves in a particular state of mind, feeling a specific emotion.”  But, on thinking about it for a while, I realized, that being numb or devoid of any emotion is in itself an emotion, which arises because of a given situation. This can be understood by the example that when we are angry, joyful, sorrowful, or scared to the extreme extent, something which cannot be articulated, we generally go quiet and show no emotion, that is when we are numb. I sincerely hope that you enjoyed reading the posts and could relate with them.  Kindly share your valuable feedback in the comments section below ! Thank you for reading !

The Emotion-Scare

Scare is not an emotion we feel only after watching a horror movie. As I see it, it can be projected in many diverse forms. We will here consider nervousness and horror under the wide term of scare. So let us begin. Nervousness. We often say, “mujhe darr lag raha hai” , out of anxiety and nervousness. We have butterflies in the stomach when awaiting something crucial. A board exam result? Yes, we are scared. Expecting a lab test report, waiting for a chance to present a speech before a large audience, or an upcoming interview, every time, even if only a bit, we will be nervous, we will be scared. This anxiety and fear we experience is evidence that whatever the thing is, it is important, that is why we experience anticipation of what lies ahead. Horror. We again say, “mujhe darr lag raha hai”, but this time out of horror and terror. Now there aren’t any butterflies, rather there is something heavy at the bottom of the stomach. This generally happens after watching a horror movie. The thoughts linger in the mind, and we are scared. But considering more realistic and concrete situations, we are captured by terror […]

The Emotion-Sorrow

Sorrow, the opposite of Joy.  What are the things, situations which give you joy ? Logically, does it happen that the opposite of a happy situation, or event, leave you distressed ? For example, one word for your state of mind when you succeed in an examination. Cheerful. One word for not achieving the desired result in the same examination. Dejected. What do we observe here ? As Kahlil Gibran said in his poem ‘On Joy and Sorrow’: “Your joy is your sorrow unmasked. And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.” Another excerpt says: “Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.” But I say unto you, they are inseparable. Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.” We can infer from these lines that joy and sorrow are explicitly correlated. One cannot exist without the other. When there is joy, enjoy it, because remember that there too exists sorrow. And when there is sorrow, remember that joy too awaits in the pipeline. As I had said for anger, […]

The Emotion-Joy

“If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?” – Percy Bysshe Shelley This statement can be perceived as a source of motivation whenever we find ourselves in any difficulty, for it says that the times of joy are always trailing behind the hard ones. But we, humans, when in a negative state of mind, prove to be quite efficient in pointing out loopholes in anything and everything. I say so because it can be contended that winters are longer and spring is shorter. But how do we react to these 4 seasons? (of course, apart from winter and spring we have summer and autumn). We blame the winter for making us suffer with a chilling effect; we blame the summer for the scorching sun; we blame autumn for making the dried leaves fall of the trees associated with gloom (which we would discuss in detail in the post on sorrow); where do we go in spring? Where do we go when the flowers bloom and the butterflies hover over them? Where do we go when the breeze has a refreshing aroma? At that time, we find ourselves in a deep slumber. When the harsh conditions of the other seasons rain […]

The Emotion-Anger

We have often heard that anger is a negative emotion and being angry is a negative state of mind. So, how will we classify a person who we generally observe being furious? Will that person be called a negative person? We must understand that anger is only an emotion and cannot be one’s temperament. It is something which stems from some particular reasons and has its roots lying deep down somewhere in an individual’s mind. The kind of given circumstances people face are quite different from each other and thus prominent differences can be observed in their anger patterns. But one thing can surely be generalized that anger is a common emotion and is present in some amount in every person. As humans, we are capable of controlling our emotions and maintain a calm mindset during testing times, but anger is a state of mind where we may lose control over our mind and our thoughts. Once this happens, we become an example of the common saying that mostly wrong decisions are made when in anger. While it is true that angry decisions are harsh but sometimes, certain difficult ones, which we find tough to take or share with other […]

The Emotions Series-Intro

Hey Reader ! I have a question for you. What is the one thing we constantly do throughout the day, even when we aren’t engaged in any specific task ? My answer would be, we think, we feel. We always find ourselves in a particular state of mind, feeling a specific emotion. These emotions are like winds, which blow over us, considering the situation we find ourselves in. sitting in an examination hall can send a shiver down the spine, and after excelling in the exam, flowers of glee bloom. If unfortunately, the exam result does not come in favour, gloom takes charge and the frustration may be vented out on anything that comes in the way, in the form of rage. Thus, I present to you brief elaborations on some of our most common emotions : Anger, joy, sorrow, scare. Enjoy reading !
